During a live presentation in New York City this morning, Sony revealed its latest full-frame mirrorless camera, breaking new ground in this ever-more crowded market with the Sony a7R IV: the world’s first 61MP full-frame camera, with a burst speed of up to 10fps, and a reported 15 stops of dynamic range.

Sony claims that the a7R IV sets “new standards” in image quality and operability. The BSI CMOS image sensor inside is brand new, making it the first true sensor update for Sony alpha cameras since 2015, and allowing Sony to reach a reported 15 stops of dynamic range on this chip. And, just case 61MP isn’t enough, you can use an evolution of the Sony’s built-in sensor-shift multi-shot mode to create 240MP image files. Even when you crop down to APS-C mode, you can still capture 26MP of resolution, making it the “highest resolution APS-C capture today,” according to Sony.

The autofocus system provides 567 phase AF points covering 74% of the image area in full-frame mode. In APS-C mode, 325 of those points cover almost the entire APS-C area, providing more than 100% AF coverage vertically and nearly 100% coverage horizontally. And the same time Real-Time Tracking AF, Real-Time Eye AF and Animal Eye-AF found in the a9 is being included in the a7r IV, ensuring extreme accuracy if Sony’s previous cameras are anything to judge by.

Finally, if you thought 61MP would slow this camera way down, you’re wrong. The Sony a7R IV is able to shoot a reported 10fps with continues AF/AE tracking for up to 68 images at full resolution.

On the video front, the Sony a7R IV can capture full-frame 4K oversampled from 6K, offering full-pixel readout in Super 35mm crop or a pixel-binned signal from the full width of the sensor. The camera will also be the very first Sony camera to offer Real-Time Eye AF in video, an announcement the received a lot of approval from the folks in the crowd at Sony’s event.

And Sony made much of breaking new ground in terms audio recording as well. The company introduced a new digital audio interface that keeps the signal digital from microphone to camera. This is possible thanks to the new ECM-B1M shotgun microphone that features a built-in Analog to Digital converter, and the brand new multi-interface hot shoe found only on the Sony a7R IV.

Other improvements mentioned only briefly include dual UHS-II SD card slots, enhanced weather sealing, an ultra-high resolution 5.76M-dot EVF, USB Type-C for tethering, fast built-in WiFi with support for Wireless tethering and, wait for it: a deeper grip for all the folks who keep complaining about the ergonomics.

The Sony a7R IV arrives in September for $3,500, alongside a new vertical grip (VG-C4EMO) for $400 and that new shotgun microphone (ECM-B1M) with built-in analog to digital converter for $350. There’s also a new XLR microphone adapter kit (XLR-K3M) which will launch in October for $600.

Sony went to great lengths during their presentation to highlight how the market is changing from DSLR to mirrorless, and tying that back to Sony’s dominance in this market. With their lead over Canon and Nikon in the world of mirrorless, and the might of the Sony brand name (and checkbook) behind them, Sony wants to reiterate in no uncertain terms that they are the innovator in this market.

The Sony a7R IV certainly sends that message…

This is a developing story as we follow Sony’s live presentation from New York City. Refresh the page for the latest updates.

Canon announces development of six new RF series interchangeable lenses to strengthen the EOS R System product lineup

TOKYO, February 14, 2019—Canon Inc. today announced that the company is pursuing development of six RF series interchangeable lenses for the RF mount to be released during 2019. Taking full advantage of the features of the RF mount—the same large 54 mm internal diameter as the EF mount and a short back focus1—RF lenses realize dramatically increased flexibility in lens design compared with existing EF lenses. With the addition of these attractive lens models, Canon aims to strengthen the capabilities of the EOS R System.

On September 5, 2018, Canon announced the EOS R System of cameras and lenses, a new imaging system that offers greater flexibility in lens design and expands the possibilities of optics, releasing four RF lenses one after another. These are the core of the RF System, which employs the newly developed RF mount.

Now, development is underway for six new RF series lenses for 35mm film-equivalent full-frame EOS R Series cameras—the RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM, which feature an f/2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range; the RF85mm F1.2 L USM and RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS fixed-focal-length lenses with a fast f/1.2 aperture; and the RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM, which covers an extensive zoom range. Price and additional specification of the lenses will be announced at a later date.

The essence of photographic and videographic expression is the manipulation of light, which requires lenses. Going forward, Canon continues to pursue ideal lenses that realize descriptive performance with higher resolution and contrast. What's more, on December 19, 2018, Canon reached a new production milestone of 140 million EF lenses2, reinforcing its position as the world's highest-volume manufacturer of interchangeable lenses. True to the development concept of the EOS Series established in 1987—speed, comfort and high image quality—the company will continue to expand the boundaries of photographic expression and enable users to achieve innovative image capture. Through ongoing efforts to deliver attractive and reliable products, Canon strives to contribute to the further development of photo and video culture.

1 A short distance between the optical axis from the vertex of the rear lens element to the imaging plane when focused to infinity.
2 Including EF-S, EF-M, RF lenses and EF Cinema lenses

Canon RF Lenses under Development

Three lenses featuring large f/2.8 apertures across the entire zoom range

(RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM / RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM / RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM)

With the demanding needs of enthusiast and professional photographers in mind, Canon is pursuing the development of three large-aperture lenses for wide-angle (15-35 mm), standard (24-70 mm) and telephoto (70-200 mm) zoom shooting that feature fast f/2.8 apertures across the entire zoom range to facilitate easy adjustment of such settings as exposure. Utilizing the large-diameter mount and short back focus made possible by the RF mount alongside such features as image stabilization (IS), the lenses embody Canon's mission to achieve high image quality, high performance and compact design. In developing a new lineup of F2.8 L IS zoom lenses as part of the Company's L (Luxury) Series—which pursue the highest standards of descriptive performance, operability and durability—Canon aims to expand the possibilities of visual expression for users.

Two f/1.2 large-aperture medium-telephoto fixed-focal-length lenses

(RF85mm F1.2 L USM / RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS)

Development is underway for two new medium-telephoto fixed-focal-length lenses featuring an f/1.2 aperture and superb optical performance that achieve high image quality. In addition to delivering large, exquisite bokeh effects when shooting wide open, the RF85mm F1.2 L USM realizes descriptive performance, operability and durability worthy of its L Series designation—meeting the needs of professional photographers and anyone striving for superior visual expression.

The RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS features a similar optical design to the RF85mm F1.2 L USM while achieving Defocus Smoothing (DS), a distinct soft bokeh rendering with smoother edges made possible through the use of proprietary deposition technology currently under development, making it ideal for portrait shooting.

A powerful zoom lens covering a versatile range of focal lengths

(RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM)

Canon is currently developing the RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM, a compact and lightweight lens—ideal for use with the EOS R (released on October 25, 2018) and the EOS RP (to be released in mid-March 2019)—that covers an extensive focal length range from 24 mm at the wide angle end to 240 mm at the telephoto end. Thanks to its zoom range, the lens is suited to a variety of shooting scenarios, including travel, snapshots, landscape and portrait photography as well as videography.

Reference Exhibit
Mock-ups of these six lenses will be on display as a reference exhibit at the Canon booth during the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2019 to be held at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center from February 28 to March 3.

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 13, 2019 – Responding to
the demand from amateur and advanced amateur photographers for an
entry-level, full-frame mirrorless camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader
in digital imaging solutions, today announced the second camera in the
EOS R lineup, the EOS RP. The EOS RP is designed for photographers
looking to step up from Canon’s APS-C cameras: the EOS Rebel, EOS M and
the EOS 80D, into the world of full-frame mirrorless photography.
Weighing in at just 17.29 ounces, the EOS RP camera is lighter than a
500ml bottle of water and smaller than Canon’s popular APS-C DSLR
camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T7i, coming in at approximately 5.0in (w) x
3.77in (h) x 2.36in (d). With optics at its core, the EOS RP takes full
advantage of the complete line up of RF lenses and is compatible with
the existing collection of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses with the use of
one of three optional RF EOS-R Mount Adapters .

“As Canon continues to evolve its full-frame mirrorless cameras, our
goal is that one day the EOS R line becomes as widely popular as our
celebrated lineup of EOS DSLR cameras,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and
chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As a company, we believe
that in order for us to accomplish that goal, Canon needs to develop
full-frame mirrorless cameras for every skill level of photographers and
that starts with amateurs and advanced amateurs. This makes the EOS RP
the perfect addition to the existing lineup.”
The new Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera features a 26.2
megapixel CMOS sensor that is powered by the company’s DIGIC 8 image
processor, providing users with high-image quality, outstanding
operation and functionality. The new Canon EOS RP features Dual Pixel
CMOS Auto Focus (AF) with 4,779 manually selectable AF points and a wide
AF coverage area of 88 percent horizontal and 100 percent vertical.
With f/1.2 lenses, the camera astonishingly boasts AF sensitivity in low
light in as little as Exposure Value (EV) -5. When using the RF
24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens with the EOS RP, the camera can focus in as
little as 0.05 seconds with Dual Pixel CMOS AF . When using eye
detection AF, the camera can automatically detect faces and focus on the
eye of the subject. This feature is supported when the camera is set in
either servo AF mode during continuous shooting and movie servo AF, as
well as one-shot AF.
Like the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera that was announced in
September 2018, the EOS RP is built around the same 54mm mount diameter
and short-back focus. This allows for the use of one of three optional
mount adapters for full compatibility with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E
and MP-E lenses. Through the use of the optional Drop-In Filter Mount
Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter, these lenses, in fact, gain
functionality.
For photographers looking to further expand their abilities and
capture a wide variety of both still and video images, the EOS RP
features Visual Guide mode. First introduced with the EOS Rebel T7i and
EOS 77D, this mode allows users to see on screen how switching modes on
the mode dial or tweaking settings can alter the image they are about to
capture. This mode helps to guide photographers to capture more
compelling images, such as ones with a shallow depth-of-field or being
able to give moving subjects a frozen or flowing look. For those looking
to expand their imaginative options, the camera also features Creative
Assist mode that allows photographers to use new and unique visual
effects and adjustments when shooting, such as brightness, contrast,
saturation, color tone, monochrome and background blur. In addition, the
design, ergonomics, layout and ease-of-use of the camera are very
similar to that of other Canon cameras consumers might already be
familiar with.
Additional noteworthy features of the EOS RP camera include:

Built-in 0.39 inch, 2.36 million dot Electronic Viewfinder with Touch-and-Drag AF

Vari-Angle LCD touchscreen

4K UHD 24P/Full HD 60p video recording with 4K time-lapse shooting
and the ability to extract still images from 4K video recordings

ISO range of 100-25,600 that is expandable up to ISO of 102,400

Built-in Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® technology

Mobile RAW workflow supported paired with Digital Photo Professional Express App

Availability and Pricing
The Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera is scheduled to be
available in March 2019 for an estimated retail price of $1299.00 for
the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the RF
24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $2399.00*

It looks like these are the confirmed specifications for the upcoming
Canon EOS RP, which is pretty close to the previous specification list
that we posted. See the end of the article for some insight into that.
Canon EOS RP Specifications

26.2 Million Pixels Full Frame Sensor

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

DIGIC 8

Continuous shooting performance: 5 frames / sec

ISO sensitivity: 100 to 40000 (equivalent to extended ISO: 50, 51200, 102400)

OLED EVF

3.0 type touch panel variable angle liquid crystal

Dual Sensing IS

DLO in camera, RAW development in camera, C-RAW compatible

Size: 132.5 x 85.0 x 70.0 mm

Weight: Approximately 440g (body only), about 485g (including batteries)

Kit lens: RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

We’re wondering aloud where the “all new 24mp full frame sensor” information came from in our previous specifications list, as everything else appears correct, other than the video specifications, which do not appear above.
One thought is that there was a mixup with the EOS RP specifications
and an upcoming EOS M and/or APS-C camera. Though we cannot confirm that
either.

Canon is going to be announcing at least 5 RF lenses next week, and we’ve also been told as many as 8 will be announced.
Five lenses have already leaked and they include the following:

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM

Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM

That’ll give us the promised “holy trinity”, as well as the already rumored RF 85mm f/1.2L and a new superzoom that will likely be available in a kit.

The Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS ended up being wider than 16mm to begin the “holy trinity”, but not as wide as previously mentioned.

Canon EOS RP Specifications:

Camera weight is 400g, the lightest full-frame mirrorless camera ever

A side-articulated monitor and a comfortable grip

A new 24MP CMOS sensor. Expect the performance similar to EOS R

No Touch Bar and top monitor but an extra dial

5FPS

Standard ISO 100-40000

Eye AF now supports Servo AF and Video AF

Dual Pixel AF speed is 0.05 sec.

USB-C and headphone jack are available. Battery charging while shooting is

supported

Canon Log, HDMI clean output, and 1.56x 4K crop

Price is about $1300USD for body (We’re really hoping it’s priced this aggressively)

Keep in mind that pricing can sometimes be lost in translation due to
currency exchange. $1300 is really aggressive for a full frame camera.
Earlier rumors pegged the camera at $1600 USD.
We’re told that the Extension Grip EG-E1 is a 1cm thick “plate” to be
installed under EOS RP. It makes a better grip to hold the camera
while the memory card and battery can still be removed.

Canon is reportedly planning to launch an high-resolution EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera with at least 75 megapixels.

Canon Rumors is hearing from multiple known sources that Canon is developing an EOS R camera with “slightly more than 75MP.”
While the timeframe for launch isn’t clear (and is likely far from
being decided internally at Canon), the camera could show up in the
second half of 2019.
“One source added that the high megapixel EOS R will come once 4 or 5
more native RF mount lenses are announced, with one of the new lenses
being ‘the best landscape lens in the Canon lineup,'” Canon Rumors writes.
What’s more, the sources are confirming speculation that Canon isn’t planning to replace the 50-megapixel EOS 5DS and 5DS R with new high-megapixel DSLRs but will instead be turning its high-megapixel camera efforts toward the new EOS R line.
Canon has long been reported to have more than one full-frame mirrorless camera in development, and the $2,299, 30MP EOS R announced in September 2018 isn’t considered to be the company’s pro-grade flagship full-frame mirrorless camera.

This rumored 75-megapixel EOS R camera would more closely fit the bill, but Canon Rumors
is also hearing that the next EOS R camera to be announced in 2019 may
be an even lower tier “entry level” mirrorless camera, so professional
Canon shooters may have to wait a bit for this high-res camera to
appear.

The XF705 features an L-Series 15x optical zoom lens (35 mm film
equivalent: 25.5 mm–382.5 mm), 1.0-inch CMOS sensor and a Dual DIGIC DV 6
image-processor providing greater image quality and performance. In
addition, users can easily choose between two HDR formats—Hybrid
Log-Gamma (HLG), ideal for such scenarios as broadcasting and live video
transmission and Perceptual Quantization (PQ), which is well-suited
during web transmission and film production. The camcorder features
Canon’s newly developed XF-HEVC video format that enables users to
record HDR video to SD cards while delivering a high compression ratio.
It also allows HDR (internal SD card) and SDR (external recorder)
simultaneous recording. Delivering smaller file sizes allows for more
efficient workflows across various stages of the production process,
from shooting to editing.
When shooting 4K video, focusing precision is vital, the XF705, featuring Canon’s revolutionary Dual Pixel CMOS AF2 enables
users to maintain smooth autofocus operation through enhanced
touch-panel operations. The XF705 meets a wide range of professional
demands, with Canon Log 3, 12G-SDI, Built-in Wi-Fi, 4-channel audio, 3
density ND filter and 5 axis image stabilization for its 15x optical
zoom lens. It is also compatible with the current leading non-linear
editing software, as well as Canon XF Utility, a software that supports
the new XF-HEVC video format, as well as XF-AVC and XF-MPEG, and is used
for import, playing back and managing video data as well as cropping
still-image data.
Availability and Pricing

The Canon XF705 professional camcorder is scheduled to be available
in December 2018 with a suggested retail price of $6,999.00*. Additional
CA-CP200 L power adapters are available for purchase as well with a
suggested retail price of $285.00*.

Excellent image quality and rich expression power by combining with "RF lens"

By combining "RF lens" and 35 mm full size CMOS sensor with effective pixel number of about 30.3 million pixels * 2 and the latest image engine "DIGIC 8", it is possible to shoot with high image quality and expressive abilities.
